Back to Greenhouses Blooming Plant Care Guide Dieffenbachia plants are very easy to care for. Their variegated, broad leaved foliage make them a favorite in many households. To keep your dieffenbachia happy and healthy, make sure to provide excellent drainage and let the soil become somewhat dry between waterings. They also like warmer daytime temperatures, but not over 85F. The dieffenbachia does possess poisonous qualities--care should be taken when around small children and pets. Dracaena--or Dragon trees, do great in bright indirect light. They are easy to maintain, in that they require no more than evenly moist soil and good drainage. Never let these plants stand in water as damage can occur. The dracaena likes daytime temperatures well up to 85F. Ferns can be a wonderful addition to any household if a little extra attention is given to them. They do best in bright, indirect light and require good drainage. Care should be taken to keep the soil evenly moist and not let dry out between waterings. If the plant is exposed to fairly high temps during the day, misting would be beneficial. Ficus plants and trees are among the most popular gift giving plants. They require bright indirect sunlight, good drainage & like their soil evenly moist at all times. The common Ficus Benjamina or Weeping Fig is often offered as a tree, with normal trunks and also the more fancier braided trunk. Palm plants are a common houseplant that require little care. Usually, if placed in a north window, they can thrive when the soil is kept moist. Palms are commonly seen in dish gardens/planters and terrariums. They are among the showier of floor plants because of their large wispy fronds. Pothos or philodendron plants are among the easiest of indoor plants to take care of and keep alive. They can thrive in a wide range of conditions, from sunny to low-light, warm temps to cool. The most important care should be taken in watering--over watering can lead to root decay and rot. Spathiphyllum or "Peace Lily" are among the easiest of houseplants to care for. They produce a white ornamental "flower" of sorts and thrive in temperatures from 65F-90F. To keep your spath healthy, make sure it gets plenty of water and do not let the soil go dry between waterings. The light requirements, unlike most indoor plants are low to medium light. Schefflera plants thrive in direct bright light, but can also grow in bright indirect light. These showy plants do best when let dry between waterings and good drainage is a must. Ivy plants are great indoor plants that require little more than bright indirect sunlight and evenly moist soil. They need good drainage and never allow them to sit in standing water to prevent root rot. Dish Gardens prefer medium to bright light but protect from direct sunlight in warmer months. Water your dish garden well when soil is dry to the touch. Never over water and do not allow plants to sit in water. In most cases, the plants in your dish garden should not need repotting for at least a year. If your dish garden includes fresh flowers in water holding tubes, keep tubes filled with water to ensure the longevity of the blooms. European Gardens prefer medium to bright light but protect from direct sunlight in warmer months. Water your European garden well when soil is dry to the touch. Never over water and do not allow plants to sit in water. In most cases, the plants in your European garden should not need repotting for at least a year. If plants in your European garden are in individual pots, pay them extra attention as they tend to dry out quicker. |
